National English Toffee Day: How to make toffee candy

Toffee

January 8th is National English Toffee Day.

Toffee is a traditional candy, made from sugar and butter. Making toffee is easy.

Following are simple step-by-step directions for making toffee.

Bring 2 cups sugar, 2 cups butter and 1/4 cup water to a boil until the mixture reaches a temperature between 300°F and 310°F — or in candy making terms: hard crack stage.

When the candy reaches hard crack stage, spread over a buttered baking sheet to cool. After the toffee has cooled off, break into bite size pieces.

A batch of toffee becomes English toffee when nuts, usually almonds, are added to the cooling candy. Melted chocolate can be spread over English toffee, giving the candy a sweet chocolate coating.
