Toys Made in America: Parents and Grandparents shop for safe toys

November 8, 2007

Parents and grandparents are in a state of recall fatigue and looking for safe toys not likely to make a recall list this holiday shopping season. Any trust consumers held that toy manufacturers and the global market priorities somehow matched their own when it came to the safety of children is all but gone. As a result, Made in America toys are experiencing a surge in popularity this Christmas shopping season.

The Daily Green has published a 250+ Lead-Free Toys Made in USA and 500+ Not-Made-in-China Toys list that offer parents and grandparents an alternative to quantity over quality. In addition, The Daily Green suggests four tips for buying toys Made in America, which include:

  • Shop early. As in shop now. The demand for toys made in the US might exceed supply.
  • When shopping for toys made in the US, look to independent and small retailers. According to The Daily Green, big box retailers don’t have the time or interest in stocking many of these kinds of toys.
  • Surf the net when shopping. There are web destinations that specialize in quality Made in America toys.
  • Be prepared to pay more at the register.

In part, consumers are being held accountable for the lack of toy safety and quality because of the demand for cheap merchandise. I understand this assertion, but I do not believe for a second that parents and grandparents were ever willing to save a few dollars if it meant their beloved children were put at risk.

Parents and grandparents will be quite willing to pay more or buy less if the choice is quality versus questionable quantity. The problem for parents and grandparents stems from a trust in regulatory agencies to monitor products entering our country and ensuring our safety before the merchandise made it to store shelves. With the continuing recalls, that has not been the case.
