PostSecret: A Lifetime of Secrets
October 11, 2007
There are secrets — and then there are secrets. All secrets are intensely private by nature. However, the paradoxical universality of secrets is that secrets secretly want to be spoken, want to be known, if only there were a safe way to reveal the secret. How to reveal a secret and keep it secret. Enter PostSecret.
PostSecret began three years ago as an art experiment. Intrigued by other people’s secrets, Frank Warren began publishing the blog PostSecret where a postcard with a secret revealed is sent in anonymously and then published online. Most of the postcards sent in are a collage of images and words. The award-winning PostSecret blog has evolved into four published books in collections of anonymously and decoratively created postcard secrets.
The first three books, all bestsellers are PostSecret, My Secret, and The Secret Lives of Men and Women. The newest, and fourth book in the PostSecret series is A Lifetime of Secrets. The Amazon book review states,
“In his most extraordinary book yet, Warren again delves into our collective confessions, presenting a never-before-seen selection of provocative and moving PostSecrets. A Lifetime of Secrets lays bare our private fears, hopes, regrets, and desires, from people as young as eight and as old as eighty. From painful admissions of infidelity to breathtaking revelations and endearing sentiments, Warren’s latest collection will shock and move readers of every age, revealing secrets that have haunted their creators for a lifetime.”
If you have visited the PostSecret blog you have discovered that some confessions are down right hilarious, some confessions inspiring for the soul and some secrets heartbreaking and overwhelmingly painful. Warren has stated that $100,000 dollars has gone to suicide prevention helplines as a result of the PostSecret art project.
Warren estimates the PostSecret art project receives over 1,000 postcard secrets a week.
A visit to the PostSecret blog is highly recommended. If you would like to contribute to the PostSecret project with a postcard secret of your own, send to:
