Madonna: The English Roses for tweens

October 7, 2007

madonnanewenglishroses Four new books in The English Roses series of children’s books written by Madonna will became available last month. Madonna’s first book about five London grade school-aged girls, who are best friends, was published in 2003.

From a mother’s perspective, Madonna has channeled her storytelling creativity into a series of books that not only help her daughter Lourdes navigate the path of girlhood, but also for girls worldwide who read about the challenges and interests as experienced by the English Roses — Amy, Charlotte, Nicole, Grace and Binah.

From the publication of the first The English Roses book, and all books in The English Roses series since, the ages of the English Roses mirrors the age of Madonna’s own daughter Lourdes. Lourdes, who prefers to be called Lola, is now almost 11 years old and entering the age of a tween. The newest books in The English Roses series is written for a tween audience.

Madonna’s purpose and intent for writing children’s books came after a suggestion by her Kabbalah teacher that Madonna share the spiritual wisdom she had learned through the study of Kabbalah in the form of stories for children.

On The English Roses website, Madonna explains of her venture in becoming a children’s book author, “Raising kids makes most people, including myself, grow up at least a little. It also makes us more responsible and more thoughtful about our own actions and their consequences for those around us. Reading to my kids at night seemed like the ideal time to teach them a thing or two about life, love and the pursuit of happiness.”

The English Roses website is an extension of the book series designed as an online destination where tweens can play interactive games, take quizzes, read horoscopes, download screensavers, and more. Featuring the English Roses, there are members only areas that will be accessible with the use of secret codes from membership cards found in all four books.

Callaway Arts & Entertainment Nicholas Callaway stated, “Madonna knows girls. As one of the entertainment, cultural and fashion icons of our age, she will now take a new generation of girls on a great adventure in the life and times of the English Roses.”

Madonna donates all profits from her books to Raising Malawi.
