The practice of voluntary abstinence from the consumption of solid foods during a specific period of time, known as fasting, began as part of religious ritual thousands of years ago. For spiritual purposes, fasting is believed to purify the body and the soul and is a religious practice that continues among many of the followers of major religions today.

More recently, fasting is reported to be used as either a method of extreme weight loss by those suffering from anorexia or young people attempting to emulate the current celebrity thinspiration lifestyle or as a practice believed by some to contribute to better health.

By eliminating toxins, and giving the digestive system a rest, the benefit of a fast is said to lead to a stronger, more robust immune system.

In the last several decades, information about chemical toxins and pollutants have made attention-grabbing health news story headlines. Public awareness of the toxic effects in some of our food supply and environmental pollutants and the body burden of chemicals most of us carry has created a serious concern. As a result, detox diets are becoming, in part, more popular as concern for a solution to the elimination of toxins from the body intensifies.

Although most detoxification diets do not make a formal claim as a weight loss program, fasting is often associated with a temporary and dramatic weight loss. For her role as Dina in Dreamgirls, Beyonce Knowles publicly discussed using the lemonade maple syrup detox diet to lose 20 pounds in two weeks. Howard Stern’s Robin Quivers reported using the same detox diet to lose weight. Recently, Quivers spoke on the Howard Stern radio show about trying The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox program.

Developed by the founder and director of the Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat at the Martha’s Vineyard Inn, naturopathic doctor Roni DeLuz, one of the newest detox diets combines a fasting cleansing of the body with weight loss in a claim that you can lose 21 pounds in 21 days. DeLuz’s detox diet consists of juices, herbal teas, nutritional supplements, vitamins, and enzymes, as well as recommended colonics and enemas. There is no chewing of solid food allowed during the three week fast.

According to DeLuz, The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox program will lead to weight loss as a result of increased metabolism and energy experienced during the fast. Other beneficial claims include:

  • Greater mental clarity, memory, and focus.
  • Fewer headaches and backaches, less arthritis and joint pain.
  • A reduction in cellulite.
  • A stronger immune system and fewer colds.
  • Alleviated symptoms of PMS, hot flashes, night sweats, and menopausal and other hormonal swings.

DeLuz has outlined her detox diet program, based on years of working with clients of Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat at the Martha’s Vineyard Inn, in a recently released book titled, 21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox.
